Together with Friends and Colleagues for Infinite Possibilities: Yamaguchi University

Yamaguchi University is a principal university in the region with 9 faculties, 1 school, 7 graduate schools, and a student body of over 10,000. The university boasts 210 years of history with origins that trace back to Yamaguchi Kodo, a private school established in 1815. Yamaguchi University contributes to regional vitalization as a center of knowledge based on the philosophy: “A Forum for Wisdom-Discover. Grow. Create.” In addition, the university embraces the spirit embodied in the Meiji Restoration of rising to new challenges in the world, and has seen over 130,000 graduates go out to work in a wide range of fields throughout Japan and around the globe.
The world is constantly evolving and changing dramatically. Everything, even humans, is connected to the internet through the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Internet of Humans (IoH). Digital transformation is changing our workstyles, and more efficient life is just around the corner. The question is how an information-driven society will enrich human lives and bring happiness. There is a need for human resources who possess highly specialized expertise as well as flexible minds and a broad education, whether they study humanities or sciences. To meet that demand, Yamaguchi University is focusing on university-wide data science education and English education, widely incorporating problem-based active learning, and practicing cross-disciplinary STEAM education.
The university also conducts research to address societal challenges such as global warming countermeasures and coping with an aging society through innovative interdisciplinary studies. From basic to applied research, we are refining Yamaguchi University’s strengths and promoting joint research with domestic and international research institutes and companies.
Following a belief in the importance of regional collaboration, and with the community’s trust as a center of knowledge, the university plays the role of a think tank. We collaborate with industry, academia, government, and financial institutions to pinpoint regional issues, then search for and propose solutions to help promote regional revitalization. Furthermore, Yamaguchi University Hospital provides cutting-edge medical treatments regionally, nationally and internationally.
Diversity births vitality. Regardless of gender, disability, ethnicity, or race, we believe all people can express their individuality, share and respect one another’s values, connect, and develop new values together. Respecting and utilizing the diverse knowledge possessed by the university is very important, and we regard globalization as a reflection of diversity.
Through these endeavors, we strive to make Yamaguchi University an institution that contributes to the region, and to the world, by developing knowledge and fostering flexible human resources.
